Re: Amazingly cheap particle board floor

I was lucky enough to have bought a home with 27/32" OSB tongue and groove flooring. I just replaced the second piece due to water damage - one at the front door that leaked for years and another where a window AC has leaked for years. I can't imagine how particle board would have held up.

Re: Remodel in progress

Thanks for the replies. Greg - I completely agree. The choice for smartside panels was purely financial. Cost is about half after you add sheathing and the cost of vinyl. I've installed vinyl siding and like its looks and ease of installation. Ponch - The kitchen is the next big thing on the list. A...

Re: Remodel in progress

Well I didn't get much done last weekend. Saturday we started with a corner of the house that we knew likely had some water damage. I found about 2 feet of rim joist, sill plate and floor rotted to nothing. Sooo, I moved to the opposite end and began removing the siding, window, etc. This end has a ...

Re: Smartside panels not centering on stud

For better or worse I went with option #2. With the gable end of the home already stripped of metal, wrapped, the new bathroom window re-framed, flashed and installed on Sunday, I installed three full panels. Surprisingly easy really. I'll have to install one more partial panel, the short sections a...

Re: Smartside panels not centering on stud

That is the conclusion that I am reaching. Looks like I can shift the panels down to the first stud and just have to add a section to each side of each corner. Will require extra panels but is the best way. I've come this far - not a good time to start skimping.

Smartside panels not centering on stud

I'm into the process of siding my 16x80 with Smartside panels. This is a shiplap product that needs to overlap on the center of a stud. For those of you that have installed this, or another shiplap product like T1-11, how did you handle it when a lap didn't fall on a stud? It turns out my very first...

Re: New warped Smartside Panels

Lol. Well I returned them. They were surprisingly understanding about it. Apparently after I purchased these, they brought in a new batch that was nice and flat which I now have a truckload of. Started installation on a corner that I knew had some water damage. Looks like I'll need to replace about ...

Re: New warped Smartside Panels

I answered my own question - I'll take it back and see if they have some covered stock that is in better shape.

New warped Smartside Panels

I just got a second patch of smartside panels and they look like pringles. Think they will pull flat or should I just take the whole lot back and go somewhere else? They will be installed on 2x4 16" o.c. exterior over housewrap. My concern is that they may have been in the weather for some time.

Re: Remodel in progress

Weatherman is reporting two weeks of dry (and hot) weather after today. Couldn't happen at a better time. Yesterday evening was spent removing the front porch (with a reciprocating saw) and trimming some shrubs so that we can remove the existing siding. Inside I removed more of a wall separating the...

Re: Remodel in progress

I do have a nail gun that will shoot ring shanks. I'm leaning toward screws too for the reasons outlined above. Since that is what anchors the new roof to the old, I don't want to take a chance on loosing a roof in one of our 70+ mph wind storms in Oklahoma. The furring strips will be attached to th...

Re: Remodel in progress

Update: Roofing ordered. 26ga, 40yr warranty. Ordered panels, eve, gable and ridge cap as well as custom skirting top trim. Total, with screws, tax and all was just over $1800. One of our bigger expenses. Should pick it up Friday. Of course I'll still need insulation and furring strips. Question: On...

Re: Total Remodel - Project 3: Drywall & Insulation

We've been (well, my wonderful girlfriend) has been applying a knock-down texture and it is surprisingly easy to do. It's a heavier texture and it really lets you cover things up that might otherwise be noticed or time consuming to get perfect. It also looks pretty good. I didn't think I would like ...

Replacement Skirting Top 'Z' Trim?

I'll be buying my smartside panel siding and roofing soon and want to replace the metal Z flashing trim that covers and secures the top of my metal skirting. Does anyone know if an off the shelf product (preferably in white)? I can have the metal roofing manufacturer bend us some but I'd like to che...
