Re: Corners

Whatever you do in creating the corners, one of the most important pieces of equipment you will need is a shop vacuum. You wouldn't believe what plaster dust will do to your regular vacuum cleaner, and it isn't pretty. If you don't have one, spring for the extra fifty bucks or so and get one. I used...

Re: replacing garden tub in doublewide

Don't count on being underbudget, even if you get the Habitat store tub. ABS and plastic tubs are notorious for deteriorating badly and invisibly, until the big crack springs. Additionally, you really have to open up stuff and see what's under the surface finish stuff: When we started redoing our ba...

Re: Weak spots in floor?

When we redid the bathroom floor (after an undetected shower pan leak which resulted in the particleboard disintegrating,) we ripped out as much of the rotten particleboard, used a sawzall to get as close to the walls as possible. Then we sistered in 2 x 6 joists across the floor to the existing joi...

Yeah, I thought about that, but didn't care. I pull the vents and brush out the screens when I'm doing my weekly heavy-duty vacuuming.

Bathroom re-do----BRAGGING!!

IMG00030-20120115-1037.jpg My husband has managed to redeem himself in my eyes with the progress on the master bath re-do. An unnoticed crack in a shower floor pan softened the floor, and led to major mold. When I darn near broke my ankle stepping from joist to joist, I started making dark threats....

Re: mice=best

I realize this is an old thread, but decided to post this anyways. I like redundancy built into a rodent repellent system. I hate mieses to pieces, like the old cat cartoon character used to say, and when I found evidence of one in the house a couple of years ago, got to work after my heart slowed d...

Re: Metal roofs on manufactured homes

Shortly after I replaced my shingle roof with another shingle roof, the park changed its rules to allow metal roofs. Several homes of my vintage (1990's) now sport them. They are absolutely beautiful. I won't be doing this, I now have forty-five year warranty shingles atop a new roof deck, so I expe...

Re: "Real Windows" instead of interior storm window

Actually, I found a local window shop which advertised double-hung low-e vinyl replacement windows of 100 inch size (the sum of height and width) installed for $179. It turned out to be a better price than HD or Lowes. We trimmed out the interiors using colonial molding ourselves, which gives the ki...

Re: mice deterant

I use the D-Con bait trays in the crawl space, and place them on piers in each corner of the crawl space. I put them where larger animals (such as cats) can't access them. Two caveats: 1) Be sure that you have absolutely no water leaks in your plumbing, otherwise the mouse will burrow into the under...

Re: Bye-Bye garden tub. Hello REAL shower!

Actually, I'm finding the prices are better at plumbing supply houses than the big box stores, particularly for the "guts." The multiple choice Delta shower valve we got for the master bath re-do was ten bucks less than the box store, and the Swanstone shower pan was $21 less. Plus, both o...

Re: Tile in M.Closet for Water Heater??

My water heater is in a paneled-off compartment behind the utility room. It was installed over linoleum. Don't be lulled into security thinking that linoleum will offer all that much protection against a leak. Because the compartment is paneled-off, we failed to notice our leaky water heater until I...

Re: Edging around Skirting

You can do what I did--trench out about four inches from the baseboard support, lay down black plastic (heavy gauge,) and then fill with crushed stone. I used a crushed white stone, marketed as crushed marble, which I doubt it is, but any kind of stone mulch will do. It wasn't cheap---cost about $20...

Re: Trafficmaster Allure flooring after a couple of years

Oh, JD, I wouldn't have thought I could have done it on my own, that's why the handyman. The guy had previously had a good reputation, but got into drugs. I got stuck with a few cases of Allure and no handyman when he got arrested, so I decided to try it myself by default. Now if I can only work up ...

Re: How to turn my bedroom boho chic?

Umm--"boho chic" is really a redux of what we used to call "eclectric," with a very balanced selection of periods and styles. You'll want, for example, to include a contemporary piece or even a transitional piece, add some elements from Edwardian, Art Deco, or even Victorian, and...
