Re: Installing heavy ceiling fixture

In a '79 Lancer/Champion mobile home (predates manufactured homes) you could have 1x2 ceiling trusses. In anything less than a 2x4 truss I would advise against any type of side mount fan box. I also do like the spreader type suspension bars because they could actually spread the trusses, causing pos...

Re: Whats under this?

The lines in the ceiling makes it look like the marriage beam. If it is running down the middle of the home, then that is what it is. You can trim it any way you like, but you won't be able to remove it. Uncovering it, it should like the edges of two 2x10s or 2x12s, sandwiching a couple of matching ...

Re: Cheap Pnuematic Nailer.. any recommendations

Trim nailers come pretty cheap. There is always Harbor Freight, but i would go with the cheaper stuff at Lowes of Home Depot, etc. If the gun does not work out it is easy to return. An 18ga gun using 2" brads will cost about $60. You can get a 16ga gun, running heavier brads, for $90. Or move t...

Re: southern ca.

You picked the right city, San Diego. The best year 'round weather. If you can afford it, SD is the most desirable city. Fresno is great weather wise for about 8 months out of the year. We have a couple months of too hot in the summer and a couple of months of colder than I like in thew winter. I am...

Re: Travel Trailer/Deck Roof transition

This could be a hard one to flash. Does the trailer move at all when getting in or walking around? It could be the tiniest amount of movement and flashing would constantly be coming loose. When you attach to the trailer, be sure to attach under the drip rail and not on the roof surface itself. When ...

Re: Inside window trim/frame

It sound s to me like you are talking about the paneling finish on the jambs. I would just use 1/4" sanded plywood. Might need a couple of layers like the manufacturer used. 1 4x8 sheet would do a bunch of windows for $22 or so. The 1/4" would stand up a lot better than 1/8" luan. Def...

Re: what sealant?

butyl tape is the good stuff. I use it for many kinds repairs. It will stay soft and can be a bear to scrape off even after many years. First learned about it trying to peel back roof aluminum on an old motorhome. Became a believer on the spot. But if it were me, I would probably go with silicone fo...

Re: Remove sliding glass door?

Those screws on the outside is what holds the door in place. You may have a couple more screws around the strike area. Sometimes people will add screws to the jambs, but it is really unnecessary. The threshold should just have a groove that a lip on the door jamb is set into.

Re: Insulation/plumbing questions

Encapsulated insulation is great stuff. Less itchy and everything Dale said. I don't know the denier weight of the black poly underbelly, but it is strong enough to do anything you would ask of it. Stronger than HomeWrap by a long ways. On rim joist edges, I like to fold a 1" strip of 1/4"...

Re: Insulation/plumbing questions

Hi Todd and welcome to the forum. You are kind of on your own with the plumbing. When you pioneer new grounds, there is always risk. But I certainly can see how it could work provided you can keep the water lines from the utility supply to the first service, usually the water heater, insulated and f...

Re: Roof Leak Repair Question

Yes, a re-coat sounds in order. but also take a look at the roof metal where it bends over the edge to the j-channel, especially where you see dents or hard line creases. When the roof expands and contracts, it will often makes tiny stress fractures near these dents. IF the bend is a hard crease, it...

Re: Tub faucet repair

I don't think this faucet has a cartridge. It looks like a plastic MH faucet. I replace these with Moen Alders or Caldwells, but this usually requires adding some wood to secure the faucet. For DIY, you could just buy another MH faucet like this. They will easily attach with big plastic nuts around ...

Heck, San Diego might as well be Florida to me. Been there many times but only a couple of times since I have been in Fresno, 26 years. But you don't need to check it out in person. View some live cams and then just go. Absolutely beautiful, comfortable and socially advanced. The cost of "visit...
