Installed a Coleman 17kw furnace in a friends mfg home and have a wiring question. Don't know when the home was built but was surprised to see they had used 10-3 romex on the previous furnace(30 amp) and had wrapped the neutral with red tape. It was being used as a hot conductor. Looked in the panel further and saw two others wrapped with tape the same. Remarking a neutral traveler in a 3 way is one thing but have never seen a neutral taped up in a panel being used as a conductor. Is how they come from the factory...anyone else seen this...

NEC says it is OK. All you have to do is re identify the wire and they did that with red tape.

Yep, as long as it is remarked and correct AWG wire, it is perfectly fine and is done often.

I mostly use red permanent marker, tape can come loose, but have used tape as well.

Thanks guys. Just saw the same thing again on an HVAC install. In this case they took black shrink tube and shrinked around the neutral conductors on 10-2 running to a air handler...
can you still get 8-8-8 wire??
my local supply says no

I believe it is still available in a Large diameter SJ type cord.
