Hi Tom,
The most common cause for that would be the sequencer and yes, it could have been faulty and led to high amps and melting wires , but the breaker should have tripped.
I would go locally and get the correct overcurrent breaker for the home service panel and replace it as well.
Sequencer # 621679 @ $35.00 + $6.75 shipping .
It can be seen and ordered through PayPal from right side here :

Thanks.
Take care and best wishes,
Robert
Nordyne furnace won't do anything??
Thanks Robert will order Sequencer and I was going tommorow to buy new Breakers for service panel. They are currently 60amp going to go w/50amp breakers. Don't want this to happen again. Thanks Tom R
Hi Tom,
If you're talking about the breakers inside the furnace, they are for furnace wiring only and do not cover wiring outside the furnace.
They also are not overcurrent breakers, so wouldn't help any.
The breaker that is suspect is the home service panel breaker(s) for the furnace.
It or they need replacing. Also, do not change the size, that is size designed for the unit and wiring, changing that to a lower size will create nuisance tripping and unit won't work properly.
A lot of things combined could have led to wires melting, even loose wire connections.
That would create a heated wire situation with higher amp draw and should have tripped home breaker.
However, the wires could have melted through quickly before the breaker could trip.
Without being there, it's hard to say, but would replace the home breakers any way with same size/type breaker.
Thanks,
Robert
