before I paint my floors?
Or can I just paint over whatever is under the carpet/vinyl?

I painted the Plywood that was there.

I just made sure to scrape it first. Then I primed it and used gloss oil-based deck paint. That was a year ago and both rooms are holding up very well.

Pics in my album.

A great solution if a new floor is not in the budget... IT'S CHEAP!

I've been looking at your pics for a while, while I was deliberating on whether to use peel and stick vinyl, laminate, or paint for my floors, you were a great help!

Just remember - you will not be able to get the floor perfectly smooth and flat. It will drive you crazy trying.

I used Bondo for big cracks and holes. I believe you can see that in some of my pics.

I would suggest a pattern of some sort to break up the imperfect bumpiness of the plywood. You could sponge paint or stamp it like I did.

You will need to wipe it down good with a lacquer thinner or something - then a good primer coat. I would highly recommend an oil based paint - especially outdoor deck paint. It is heavy duty and glossy. Give it 24 hours between coats - take your time.

Have fun - save money! - post pics
