Carpet under Carpet?

Here is a strange situation that I have found. I started removing the carpet from the living room of my 1987 Redman mobile home. What do you think I found under the carpet? More carpet?!? The carpet I am removing has to be original because it goes UNDER the walls. It is almost the same color but with no fading or wear.

I'm still going to remove both layers of carpet and install laminate but I thought this was most unusual.

I agree, and have never seen that before. Maybe the day it was manufactured they were out of padding??? One of those things that will probably always be a mystery.

Yanita, I think you called it right. There is no padding under the second layer of carpet. All they installed was two layers of carpet. That had to be more expensive but I'm sure the laborers weren't paying.
