only warm water coming from water heater

Hey,
i was wondering what could be causing my water to be coming from the taps only warm. i had my thermostat adjusted one notch above the recomended setting and the water was scaulding hot the other day and then yesterday it only came out luke warm.

Bad thermostat and/or bad heating element if electric.

its a natural gas hot water heater

Pilot light out, blockage in pilot tube/pilot burner, bad gas valve, burner clogged or faulty.thermostat.
Best to call a licensed plumber or heat and plumbing tech to diagnose correctly.
