We have a 10+ years old Coleman Evcon Furnace, Natural Gas, Standard Blend Air II, Model 7681-8191/A.

Is this furnace under recall? Is it still active?

I am in need of a manual to determine the size of the filter and location for replacement of the filters. Common sizes do not seem to fit and it is confusing as to where to put them. Is there a manual available with the information as to size and placement of the filter available on line?

The model number you gave is the blend air system number (separate system). Look on furnace facing for the data sticker to find furnace model number .

Thanks,
Robert

Robert,
Thaks for the quick response but I apoligize for the slow return as the furnace is 25 miles north at my mother-in-laws but here it is.

Model # DGAT056BDE, Serial # if neede, 980376913.

Hi,

Go here to order a manual :

http://www.hvacmanuals.com/

If you have any problems with it, please call 605-229-2627 to the store and they will assist you.

No recalls on your furnace.

There are 2 filters, size 16 X 20 X 1, and they go behind the louvered vents in the top door panel.

They go in laying side ways.

Thanks,
Robert

But there inlays the problem, You state the go in laying sideways.........the 16" vertically and the 20" horizontally yet the furnace cover measures 19 3/8" wide making the 20" bend and not lay flat.

An aside, the manual you linked me to gave the same dimensions but it gave no picture as to how the fit so it was no help at all.
Please advise or possible instructions for positioning these filters. I thought of cutting an inch off the 20" with a scissors and duct taping the end to get it to lay flat. If they go in the other direction, are there wires to hold them in or use duct tape to hold in place?

I've had them fit perfect, had some that I trimmed one end, others that I used cut to fit fibered hogs hair filters.

Some have a piece in between them that turns to cover filters at edges and hold in place.

Some I have to run wire in X shape to hold.

Each one is different and without me being there, cannot be more specific.

Your furnace calls for 16X20X1, but if it won't fit, then you have to adapt, just be sure no air gets by unfilterd.

Thanks,
Robert

You're very welcome, happy to help. One added thought, changing filters from what is recommended by manufacturer can be detrimental IF it restricts airflow too much.

I would stay with the 16X20X1 and "make" it fit and cover area . Hogs hair would be only filter I would use in replacement without an hvac tech to test airflow and temps.

Thanks,
Robert

Hogs hair filter sounds really a light filter. I did stay with the correct size cut on one end, re-taped and it does lay flat. From the local box store a 3M Filtrete 1000 MPR, 16 x 20 x 1 (Red packaging)
To heavy?

I stay away from 3M filters, they trap particles really fast and tend to clog up quickly.

Hogs hair filters are great and work really well.

OK, I can understand that but how about addressing airflow and temps per your reply above, should I have it tested by an hvac tech?
I plan on using them for a few months anyway as my modifications will not allow me to return them and then go to a hogs hair filter. Will it be OK for airflow without damaging anything?

Hi,

Should be ok, but to know for sure would require an hvac tech test the temps and airflow.

You can test inlet return air temp and then test supply temp at closest register to furnace and see what the difference is.

That would give you a ballpark idea of whether it is ok.

Hogs hair filters are used often and I know of no problems with airflow restriction if you clean and/or change them out every month (buy 2 for this).

Thanks,
Robert
