Coleman Presidential 6806-732 fan issues

Postby Twisted » Sun Oct 25, 2009 11:36 am

Fan was replaced a couple years ago and when it kicks on is fine. Honeywell digital thermostat.

Here is what it does. Thermostat will call for heat and it seems everything will kick on except for the fan. I can feel heat radiating from the furnace but no fan. It will stay like this and every minute or so I can hear what sounds like a relay kicking on or off. I usually pull the panel to expose the relays/wires/etc. and with a woodend dowel start tapping on things till it kicks on. Sometimes it takes a few light taps, sometimes I have to work at it. I always try to keep track of what part I tap on that makes something click and kick the fan on but seems to be a different part every time so I have no idea.

Another symptom it does on rare occasion is it will do the above, so I will turn the thermostat way down to not call for heat, and the little "flame" icon on my thermostat will stay on and heat will keep radiating. I just kill the breaker for a few minutes and start over when that happens.

THe furnace works as it should most the time. But it gets in moods where it fights me like this. It has worked fine for the last month but in the last coupld days this gremlin has returned. It will work fine for either a few days or few weeks but it always returns. Would like to get it fixed since I'm often gone and need it to stay warm in here for the critters.

Thanks in advance,
Jake

Hi Jake,

Can you send a pic of the wiring diagram ? Would need it to be able to help any at all.

Otherwise and may anyway, need to call an hvac tech.

Thanks,
Robert

Hi Jake,

Ok, just remembered that this is an electric furnace, so what you described is most likely a bad sequencer or contactor, whichever it has.

They are rarely available and very pricey when they are at $100+ .

I would see how many actual coils there are and what the KW rating is total and of each coil.

Then go with newer sequencer and new limits.

Thanks,
Robert

Robert,

Thank you for your advice so far and I am still working on this. It has gotten worse the last few days so I need to take care of it before the real cold hits us here.

Is there a diagram or chart to tell me where to look for the coils?

Here is the mess I've got goin on. I know nothing about this thing so haven't made any changes or anything. Over the past couple years some of the wires have gotten brittle and/or burned a bit so I have replaced them with the same gauge or one size bigger but have not changed any of the connections.

Hi,

You have 3 coils and I believe it is 15KW. If you'll look for the thread in this forum a few days ago/last week from Max, he had same furnace and it says what it is.

With your lack of experience and knowledge, plus the burn markings and statements about wiring, it would be best to have an hvac tech inspect it and diagnose problem(s).

Wiring issues can cause a fire quickly and safety needs to be foremost here.

Thanks,
Robert
