I'm in the process of skirting our house with 2X10 run horizontally. I just started attaching a 2X12 band board now with a water table on top to the outside of the rim joist, and will attach p.t. wood to that on the back side, the bottom of which will be concreted into the ground. This is what the 2...

Sounds like you are using RG-59 for the bedroom cable, which has a much higher loss than the thicker RG-6 like Bill W. mentioned. DTV is an 'all there or nothing' system, so the loss from that long run of cable is degrading the quality enough to not allow the tuner to convert what little information...

Forgot to add... Since all the plumbing hangs below the joist, and I now have insulation between the joists, I simply wrapped them all in the foam pipe insulation for protection. And my belly plastic was just taped and restappled to the bottom of the joists. I think your best bet would be to insulat...

If your vents are sweating, then there's probably no clog and plenty of airflow. My thought was that you may have a leak on the return side of your air handler that's sucking more humidity in than your air conditioner can remove. Is your air coming out colder in the living room than in the other roo...

I'm sorry lacey if you felt belittled, that wasn't my intention at all! I apologize if I came across harsh. The bubble foil insulation you speak of is a little different than a straight foil insulation as it tries to address radiant AND conductive heat. That's all the bubbles are for. I think that y...

RE: A few questions

I don't think you understand the purpose of radiant barriers, so let me clarify. Heat travels from warmer areas to cool areas. Radiant barriers provide zero R-value when sandwhiched between two materials. In your case the floor deck and the laminate. Foil insulation is not like fiberglass/wool/cellu...

Condensation is a natural occurance when a cold object (your vents) touches a warmer object (the surrounding air) in the presence of moisture (humidity). Mine only does this in two rooms on occasions, that is, the bathrooms when someone is showering. You either have too much humidity in your air fro...

http://www.barrett-inc.com/barrier.html

This was the first result from google.

Mind you, it says it blocks conductive heat (one object touching another), not radiant heat like foil insulation.

RE: A few questions

Here's what I replied to an earlier post (http://mobilehomerepair.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=3277): I'm in Florida, and recently added R-19 (could have gone to R-30, but not necessary here) between my 2X8 joists on half my home so far. Basically it was a matter of slitting the belly fabric down the m...

You shouldn't have any problems. Laminate flooring is layed with a padding to 'soften' the feel of the floor with an integral moisture barrier to protect the unstable bottom. You can simply double the underlayment to raise the area under the living room to the height of the lenoleum, or go to a floo...

Yes, it's DOWN for summer, UP for winter. It's all a matter of slight breeze or wind chill though. DOWN you feel it, UP you don't. Your problem seems to be large poorly insulated windows. To fix that you either need to increase the conditioned air to the room (probably difficult and costly), or decr...

Rear (side) Door Replacement

I want a standard door here. Any tips before I do this? I can't replace mine with a wider door because of hurricane strapping on either side, so the door must be the same width or slightly narrower. That means I don't have to worry about the light switch next to it too. But what about the header? Di...

Basically it was a matter of slitting the belly fabric down the middle. Cutting the existing R-11 blanket insulation into strips at the joists to double it out over...

The vent for gas appliances will be a single wall pipe, or a double wall "B" vent. You just need to determine which you have, and find the appropriate size at the hardware store. Then take off your vent cap on the roof and add a new section of pipe to it with self tapping screws. Simple as...

When the valve leaks, it usually is just a couple o-rings/washers that need replacing for a couple bucks. There should be no need to tear out the faucet to fix this. First thing is shut off your water main. Next pop the plastic cover off the front of the knob and remove the philips screw; the knob s...
