Re: What to do about rats..

"Sealed" means no entry points, no gaps/holes. If they're burying under the blocks they you'll need to dig down around the exterior of the block and put down some wire mesh: I'm guessing this is your best bet; others can speak to what's best. I don't like poison as it usually results in cr...

Re: Yet Anothet skirting question

Knowing where you are at would be a big help. You at least want a vapor barrier (which the original belly wrap material is). Venting is a can of worms. I'm going to forgo vents except on the ends: vent during winter, close up for summer. I've got a slab with plastic on top of it. Slab that I've got ...

Re: 7" x 1/2" fascia board?

Sigh... as is the case with all lumber, the actual size is less. My 7 x 1/2 is 6 1/2 x 3/8. That means the difference is more like 3/8". I'm just going to plug the stupid thing and seal it up, as it won't be visible behind a gutter anyway.

Best (1x4) replacement belly band board?

What's the best, most durable, board to use for a belly band? I'm wanting to go with a 1x4, up-sized from 1x3 (which is particle board, I believe). Existing is damaged and was installed using non-galvanized nails (has rust bleed-through). I am up-sizing in order to provide a top channel to contain n...

Greg, I'm not following on how I can match up a 1" wide board to the existing 1/2" board(s).

Here's what I'm looking at:

7" x 1/2" fascia board?

I have a section of fascia board, about 3" x 3", which got ripped out when one of my gutters pulled out from last winter's snow. The board measures 6 1/2" x 1/2" (or just slightly less), which I figure would be stated as being 7" x 1/2". I am unable to locate this dimen...

Re: Replacing wall studs and joist band

I'm about to embark on a similar project (caused by the same ignorant construction by a former owner). I will be watching!

How much of the stud is rotted?

Might be able to shim in pieces of 2x (if only a few inches rotted).

Re: Kicking the skirting venting dead-horse, again

Yeah, freezing. Understand. Here isn't not a big concern. If one is moving moist air that isn't lower moisture content than the existing air then you end up with more moisture. The velocity of the moving air will modify this, though I am not sure it's a significant difference unless it's very high v...

Re: U-channel for 3/8" sheetrock edges

Thanks. I'll keep that in mind. Looks isn't a big concern as this is for the laundry room (behind stuff). Just want to keep the sheet rock edges clean.

Re: Floor warping

Material doesn't have to appear wet to have excessive moisture which would cause buckling. Use of a moisture meter helps determine moisture content.

U-channel for 3/8" sheetrock edges

Anyone know where I can get the square U-channel that's used around the edges of sheet rock panels used to cover access holes? This would be for 3/8" sheet rock.

Re: Kicking the skirting venting dead-horse, again

Greg, I've got a vapor barrier on concrete slab. Have a high water table. I've been working on perimeter drainage for quiet a while: could do more yet; I need to do a bit more grading (will be doing some when I do my skirting and other work). Jim, if you read those links you'll find that, for me (an...

Kicking the skirting venting dead-horse, again

I am continuing to research venting requirements as I try to complete my planning for skirting (and other) work. I recently learned that I need to keep my interior humidity levels at no more than 50%. I'd thought that it was OK to be slightly higher, but apparently not... Anyway, the reason I'm ment...

Re: Skirting vents oriented vertically?

Mark440, I just took a look at those Mueller RPN panels. Those major ribs are 1 1/4" high. That for sure would be even more of an issue dealing with penetrations that hit on the high ribs. The Champion Metal Wide Rib panels that I am aiming to use have 7/16" high major ribs. For me it was ...

Re: Skirting vents oriented vertically?

Greg, I was kind of hoping that someone else has found a need to do this. It's not a matter of how it would function (other than the installation issues, which is why I'm even considering this orientation), but how it would LOOK. I have yet to see ANY vent oriented like this. And, I can't believe th...
