Hot water and Cooking
We heat our single-wide with wood but use propane for hot water and cooking. A 100lb. tank of propane costs $88.20 delivered and lasts us about 6 weeks. I cannot afford to get a big tank brought in and am wondering if we switched to electric hot water heater and electric stove, if it would actually ...

Ok, I guess you have to click the link and then select "slideshow". Might not work too well if you have dial up.

Whipoorwills and lady slippers
I read somewhere that wherever you find the whipoorwill, you will also find lady slippers. I know it's true because since I moved to this property in 2002, I have been hearing the whipoorwill's and finding a rare lady slipper here and there. This year, I have found 4 plants. Each of the photos below...

May 17, 2009, Frosty morning, plant protection, new trellis
Good thing we had the plastic ready for the plants that are already in the garden. It was a hard frost and another is expected tonight! Our last frost date here is June 10! But, we are going to set the greenhouse plants out next weekend anyway as they are all getting too big. Ron built me a new plan...

It looks great! I'm so jealous because I've been wanting to paint my "shack" for a couple of years! Good work!

We're going to pile fresh cow manure on the back side of the greenhouse in the fall to help heat it during the late fall months and again in the early spring. Since we're out in the country with no neighbors, we can do that. The fresh cow manure will heat up for about a month and some of that heat w...

Thank you Ms VG. It's all experimental at this point but we're pretty happy with it so far.

RE: 6 x 12 greenhouse for starting plants
Because the night time temperatures in Michigan dip down close to freezing for a number of weeks in the spring, Ron devised a system for the greenhouse which keeps the plants warm at night. The styrofoam insulation just lays over the top benches. Underneath, where the greenhouse walls are insulated,...

Greenhouse temps. Yesterday, it was about 65 degrees outside but even with both vents open, the temp inside went up close to 100. Ron had to put a fan out there and shade part of the glass so the plants wouldn't cook. Some of them are in real small containers and heat up fast. After installing the f...

Extreme gardening. These raised beds and rowcovers were made with scraps of sheet fiberglass selvedged from a construction site. The beds are 4 x 12 x 8" deep. Strips of the same material were bent and anchored into the beds to make the row covers. http://mobilehomerepair.com/phpbb/userpix/1397...

RE: 6 x 12 greenhouse for starting plants
Hi all, For some reason, I didn't get any e-mails about follow up posts to this topic. Sorry to keep you all in suspense. LOL The weather was rotten, my computer broke, and then Ron and I were both sick for a couple of weeks. However, this past weekend, more work was accomplished on the greenhouse. ...

Oh, and here's a link for another greenhouse that was built for less than $50.00! It looks good to me.
