Organizing closets
| Space is limited in most mobile homes, but there is normally ample closet space in each room. You will need to maximize the use of your closets to avoid clutter in your rooms.
Firstly, do a good purge of everything you no longer use or have a desire to keep. If you haven’t worn it in 6 months, throw it out. Consider donating old children’s toys to charity, as well as books, movies, and kitchen wares. Next, if shelves do not already exist in your closets, you will need to construct a homemade organizational storage system, or you can purchase one made of plywood at your local department store. Most often these are large structures that have an overhead bar for hanging dress clothes, a lower bar for hanging jeans and smaller items, as well as many shelves for folded clothes, accessories, shoes, and personal mementos such as photo albums or that prized collection of old records. A good closet organizing system runs about $100; if you wish to save some money, you can pull an A-frame ladder with wide, flat steps into your closet, open it up, and use the steps as a small shelving unit. Another option is if you have an extra bookcase not in use. |

| Position it against the back wall of the closet and arrange the shelves with your clothing and personal items accordingly. Purchase a set of food storage containers or save shoeboxes for collecting mementos and personal care items that can be stored in the closet. Label with large white stickers and name each one accordingly: cosmetics, tools, photographs, jewelry, etc. Clear containers do tend to work best, as you can see at a quick glance, without removing the lid, what is kept in each one. Mount hooks on your closet walls for hanging housecoats and hooded sweaters that you wear often. If you have a large number of small, stringy items like scarves or belts, string a number of shower curtain hooks onto a coat hanger and use these to hold each individual one, which keeps them from getting tangled. Purchase a shoe bag and a cosmetic bag and hang on the back of your closet door. Another idea for the back of the door is a laundry bag. Rather than keeping out of season clothes on your shelves or hanging from your rod, consider packing them away for a few months in large plastic containers and place them under the bed. Similar ideas can be done in the kitchen broom closet. Mount two or three pieces of plywood on the back wall, and use small containers to divide things accordingly: baking needs in one, cleaning supplies in another, and spices in yet a separate container. Hang a plastic grocery bag inside on of the walls and fill it with bags that serve many purposes: carrying lunches, cleaning a cat litter box, or taking out the day’s garbage. |
