Energy Efficient Clothes Dryer

Clothes Dryer

Often requiring both the use of a washer and a drier, two of the biggest consumers of electricity among household appliances, washing clothes may be the most costly of all the regular household chores. Unfortunately excessive electricity use is not only expensive, but also harmful to the environment. A significant portion of electricity production is derived from the burning of fossil fuels, which as a by-product, releases a variety of harmful emissions into the atmosphere.

The best way to reduce electricity use when washing clothes is to not use a clothes drier at all. The use of outdoor clothes lines and indoor drying racks can remove half of the energy consumption from the process. Realistically, these methods are not often sufficient to meet a family's needs, so it is important to have an energy efficient dryer for times when the appliance is needed. Be sure to look for the Energy Star logo when shopping for a drier to ensure the unit meets the strict standards of the US Department of Energy and the US Environmental Protection Agency.

With the proper equipment and efficient use practises, the energy needed to wash clothes can be dramatically decreased, along with the associated financial and environmental costs. The use of a front loading washer can reduce drying times or possibly preclude the use of a dryer at all.

Also be sure to only wash full loads, so the electricity needed for a full washing and drying cycle isn't used to simply wash a couple of shirts. By planning the chore ahead of time, family members can pool their clothes to make full loads and forecasts of warm, sunny days can be observed to make full use of the clothesline.
